Teddy Sheringham is certain that Manchester City will beat Manchester United in the FA Cup final and win the treble. Having overcome Arsenal to lift the Premier League title, City are now prepping for phase two of their treble campaign: Saturday’s FA Cup final at Wembley against their arch-rivals. This in turn will be followed by the Champions League final against Inter Milan on 10th June in Istanbul. Pep Guardiola’s team are heavily favoured to win all three trophies and become only the second English side in history to complete the continental treble. The first was of course the United team of 1998/99 which featured Sheringham, with the striker famously scoring the injury-time equaliser against Bayern Munich in the UCL final before assisting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the winning goal just moments later. The former Red Devil had previously said he was ‘not worried’ about City winning the treble and admitted they were ‘looking good’ to achieve it, but now he can’t see the Citizens missing out on the two remaining pieces of silverware, telling William Hill: ‘I do think City will win the Treble. ‘Whenever some teams have been close to doing it with a few weeks to go, I’ve always thought, “I don’t want them to”, but you look at this Manchester City team and they are just phenomenal. You’ve got to take your hat off to how good they are. If anyone is going to do the same as we did in 1999 when winning the Treble with United, fair dos, they’re a phenomenal team led by a phenomenal manager. I think City are more favourites than we were going into the 1999 Champions League final. It was a tough fixture for us against Bayern Munich and could have gone either way, but I can’t see anyone winning the Treble other than City, and I hope they do it in style like they’ve been doing for the rest of the season.’
Spearheading City’s success this season has been Erling Haaland, with the striker scoring a staggering 52 goals in 51 games so far, including a record-breaking 36 in the league. ‘He’s been absolutely outstanding. He’s a machine,’ Sheringham added. ‘I’m not sure what people expected, but for him to finish above Harry Kane – and quite comfortably – means he’s had an outstanding season. I think he can get better – Pep Guardiola will work with him, he’s a natural goalscorer and he’s obviously missed some chances too, so there’s more goals there! I know Pep will try and aim higher with him, and Erling sounds like he’s focused on the job, so yes, I think he can get even better.’
Having defended their Premier League title, can Manchester City win the FA Cup and Champions League to complete the treble? Teddy Sheringham is certain they can, believing that Pep Guardiola’s team are heavily favoured to become only the second English side in history to achieve this feat. Spearheaded by Erling Haaland’s 52 goals in 51 games so far, including a record-breaking 36 in the league, Sheringham believes that City are more favourites than his United team of 1998/99 were going into the Champions League final against Bayern Munich. He hopes that they can do it in style like they have been doing for the rest of the season and believes that Haaland can get even better with Guardiola’s help.
