After Dayot Upamecano’s blunder in Bayern Munich’s 3-0 Champions League quarter-final first-leg loss to Manchester City, fans of the English club claimed that even Phil Jones would keep the French centre-back off the bench. Upamecano was robbed by Jack Grealish, leading to Bernardo Silva scoring City’s second goal. The 24-year-old has previously been linked to United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Real Madrid, but Old Trafford supporters celebrated missing out on him after Bayern’s defeat, insisting he wouldn’t even make United’s match-day squad. One fan called Upamecano’s display a “disaster class”, while another reckoned he would “never start” if he joined the Red Devils. However, one suggestion was particularly damning: “Upamecano would be holding the bench for Phil Jones if they played together for a Championship club. Guy fumbles under pressure. I swear his mistakes would be scrutinised so much more by pundits, media, & fans if he was English.” As City outclassed the German champions, one fan argued: “He is made for the Bundesliga only.” Ex-England centre-back Jones, 31, has been a bit-part player for United in recent seasons, with injuries heightening some harsh criticism. However, there’s little even the best defender in the world could have done about City’s opener, a sublime curler from Rodri on 27 minutes. Upamecano’s worst moment came when he was dispossessed by Grealish, leading to Erling Haaland crossing for Silva to nod Guardiola’s men 2-0 up. Haaland was again too sharp for Bayern soon after, nipping in to complete the romp. The supreme finisher now has 45 goals across all competitions – the most ever by a Premier League player in a season. And he’s set to smash all sorts of Champions League figures too, having already netted 34 goals in 24 games in Europe’s top club competition.
