Sergio Reguilon Returns to Tottenham After Loan Spell at Manchester United Cut
Sergio Reguilon has made his way back to Tottenham Hotspur after his loan spell at Manchester United was terminated. The full-back joined United on a 12-month deal in the summer to provide cover for their backline. However, he struggled to secure a regular spot in Erik ten Hag’s lineup, making only seven starts. After just 12 appearances in total, Reguilon will now return to his parent club.
According to The Athletic, United exercised a break clause in the contract that allowed them to end the loan move. Reguilon was initially signed as a backup for Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. However, with Shaw returning from injury and Malacia nearing full fitness, United decided to send Reguilon back to Spurs, especially since they are out of European competitions and the Carabao Cup.
Ten Hag confirmed in December that there was a break clause in Reguilon’s loan contract. He stated, “We have to make a final decision on Reguilon. But also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well.”
At present, Destiny Udogie and Ben Davies are occupying the left-back position at Spurs. Udogie, who was signed from Udinese in 2022 for £18 million, has been one of manager Ange Postecoglou’s standout performers this season. In recognition of his form, Spurs rewarded him with a new six-and-a-half-year contract in December.
Udogie expressed his happiness about the opportunity to play for Spurs, saying, “I’m really happy because I think to be here at this club is a big joy for me, so I’m really happy for this opportunity and it’s a pleasure. From the first day I came here, I’ve felt at home with the players, the coaching staff and the club. I feel so welcome and I’m happy to be here.”
In conclusion, Sergio Reguilon’s loan spell at Manchester United has been cut short, and he will now return to Tottenham Hotspur. United triggered a break clause in the contract to terminate the loan move. With Shaw and Malacia nearing full fitness, United decided it was best to send Reguilon back to Spurs. At Spurs, Udogie and Davies are currently occupying the left-back position, with Udogie impressing and earning a new long-term contract.
