Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has warned his players that they are fighting for their futures in Sunday’s FA Cup semi-final against Brighton. Speaking ahead of the game, Ten Hag said that his team needs to be prepared for the battle and that they are always playing for their futures. He added that they need to prove themselves every game from the start and earn the right to wear the shirt. Ten Hag looked nervous during the press conference, which is understandable given United’s recent shambolic Europa League exit to Sevilla.
Ten Hag has won the Carabao Cup this season, but he warned that Sunday’s game could be make or break for a number of players. At least 15 players, including Jadon Sancho, Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Scott McTominay, and Fred, are under threat. When asked if his team understands the expectation that comes with representing the club, Ten Hag said that it’s great to be part of United but the flipside is that they have to prove themselves every game from the start.
Ten Hag did not criticize Maguire, despite the defender’s nightmare performance in Seville. He is suspended for Sunday’s game, but the United boss chose only to compliment his broken captain, knowing all too well he will be under the microscope for the rest of the season. Other players Ten Hag is considering allowing to leave include Donny van de Beek, Anthony Elanga, Dean Henderson, and Brandon Williams.
The amount Ten Hag is able to spend will be shaped by whether there is a takeover or a cash injection from groups working alongside the Glazers. When asked if he has faith he will be backed by the club’s board in the summer, he replied that he does but he is here to get the best out of this group of players before Brighton. He added that they have to acknowledge it’s a mental thing and they have to learn to keep going and carry on.
