Man Utd and Chelsea in Talks to Sign Martin Braithwaite at Discounted Price
Manchester United and Chelsea are reportedly in discussions with Espanyol over a potential deal for Danish striker Martin Braithwaite. Both Premier League clubs have been searching for a new striker before the January transfer window closes, but have so far been unsuccessful in finding a short-term solution.
The opportunity to sign Karim Benzema, who is eager to leave Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad, was rejected by both United and Chelsea. However, according to Spanish newspaper Marca, the two clubs are now interested in acquiring Braithwaite before the window shuts.
The report suggests that negotiations are underway with Espanyol to secure the player for a significantly lower fee than his €7 million (£5.9m) buyout clause. It is believed that if Espanyol secures promotion back to La Liga, Braithwaite will be allowed to leave on a free transfer in the summer. Alternatively, if they remain in the Segunda Division, his release clause will drop to €600,000 (£511,000).
Braithwaite’s time at Barcelona was largely unremarkable following his emergency transfer to Camp Nou in February 2020 for €18m (£15m). After just 19 months, he was released on a free transfer and subsequently joined Espanyol in September 2022. Despite scoring 10 goals in 31 league games, the club was unable to avoid relegation from La Liga.
However, the 32-year-old has found success in the Segunda Division this season, netting 12 goals in 22 league appearances. With 10 goals in 69 appearances for Denmark, Braithwaite is also pushing for a spot in their squad for Euro 2024 next summer.
Both Manchester United and Chelsea are hoping to bolster their attacking options, and Braithwaite could provide the much-needed firepower. By negotiating a discounted price with Espanyol, the Premier League duo are aiming to secure a cost-effective deal for the talented striker.
As the January transfer window draws to a close, all eyes will be on Manchester United and Chelsea to see if they can finalize a deal for Martin Braithwaite. With his impressive goal-scoring record in the Segunda Division and international experience, he could prove to be a valuable addition to either team.
