Manchester United Considering Move for Marc Cucurella as Luke Shaw Faces Extended Injury Layoff
Manchester United is reportedly exploring the possibility of signing Marc Cucurella as a short-term replacement for Luke Shaw, who has been ruled out for an extended period due to a muscle injury. The club has held informal talks with Chelsea, who may consider a potential loan move for the 25-year-old left-back. However, it is still uncertain whether Cucurella will stay at Chelsea beyond the UK transfer window closing on Friday.
Cucurella has yet to make an appearance in the Premier League under new Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino. In the first three matches, Ben Chilwell has been selected as the left wing-back, while Levi Colwill has played at left centre-back. With Shaw’s absence, United sees Cucurella as one of the possible short-term replacements.
Currently, Alvaro Fernandez is the only fit full-time left-back at Manchester United. He featured four times in pre-season and could provide a solution to Shaw’s absence. In the recent victory over Nottingham Forest, Diogo Dalot operated at left-back. If United decides not to pursue any short-term options in the transfer market, Dalot and Fernandez could be relied upon to fill in for Shaw.
Unfortunately, primary backup Tyrell Malacia is currently unavailable after missing pre-season due to an injury sustained last season. Additionally, Brandon Williams has been loaned out to Championship side Ipswich Town, further depleting United’s left-back options.
Shaw played a crucial role last season as United secured a spot in the Champions League and won the League Cup. He operated both as a left-back and a centre-back, showcasing his versatility. Shaw started in his team’s opening two matches of the 2023-24 campaign before succumbing to injury.
The potential signing of Cucurella would provide United with much-needed depth and cover in the left-back position. Known for his attacking prowess and defensive solidity, Cucurella could seamlessly fit into United’s system and contribute to the team’s success.
As the transfer window draws to a close, United will need to act swiftly if they wish to secure Cucurella’s services. Chelsea’s willingness to consider a loan move presents an opportunity for United to bolster their squad without committing to a long-term transfer.
In the meantime, fans and pundits alike will be closely monitoring United’s transfer activities. The club’s ability to navigate Shaw’s absence and maintain their strong start to the season will be crucial in their pursuit of silverware.
