Date:

Georgi Kinkladze: The Magician of Maine Road

Georgi Kinkladze, the former Manchester City midfielder, showed off his dribbling skills as a Rangers legends side played a World XI on Sunday. Picking the ball up in the middle of the park, the ex-Gers star gave a wry smile as his opponent wriggled away from him in the centre circle. It was a sight fans at Maine Road saw regularly in the 1990s when this 5ft8in midfielder would slalom his way through a team’s defence with incredible guile and close control.

Kinkladze joined Manchester City in 1995, following a loan spell with Boca Juniors, and his career was at a crossroads. However, he soon became a cult figure, scoring a slew of stunning goals. His most famous came in 1996 against Southampton when a mazy run took him past five Saints stars before he calmly chipped Dave Beasant. The goal came second in Match of the Day’s goal of the season. However, a year later, City were relegated from the Premier League.

Despite their demotion, Kinkladze stayed loyal to the club and was rewarded by winning their Player of the Year in 1995-96. For four years, ‘Kinky’ brought City fans unbridled entertainment. Sure, he frustrated at times when he drifted out of games. But when he was on it, he was unplayable. Kinkladze played 121 times for City, scoring 22 goals.

After an ill-fated spell at Ajax, Kinkladze returned to the Premier League with Derby County. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to recreate the magic at Pride Park and finished his career in Russia with Rubin Kazan.

Kinkladze’s career was filled with moments of brilliance that will be remembered by City fans for years to come. His ability to run with the ball was second to none, and he had an incredible talent for creating space in tight areas. He was a player who could change a game in an instant, and his performances will always be remembered fondly by those who watched him play.

Kinkladze’s legacy at Manchester City is one of a true cult hero. He was a player who captured the imagination of the fans and provided them with moments of magic that they will never forget. His dribbling skills were a joy to watch, and he will always be remembered as one of the most talented players to ever grace the Maine Road pitch.

In conclusion, Georgi Kinkladze was a true magician on the football pitch. His ability to run with the ball and create space was second to none, and he provided Manchester City fans with some unforgettable moments during his time at the club. Although his career didn’t end as successfully as it began, his legacy as a cult hero will live on forever.
