Mateo Kovacic is set to join Manchester City after the club agreed personal terms with the Chelsea midfielder. The 29-year-old will enter the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge next season, and rather than lose him for nothing, Chelsea are open to offers. City are now the favourites to sign Kovacic, with incoming manager Mauricio Pochettino tasked with getting rid of players who do not suit his style. There has been little effort from either Kovacic’s representatives or Chelsea to renew his contract after five years in west London.
City are confident that a transfer is close after agreeing personal terms with the midfielder. Kovacic could become the first signing at the Etihad this summer as Pep Guardiola seeks reinforcements in midfield. There is growing unease over whether Ilkay Gundogan will stay or not, as his contract expires at the end of the month. Kovacic’s arrival would offset some of the fears over Gundogan leaving, though ideally, Guardiola would prefer both.
The next move will be to agree on a fee with Chelsea over the Croatia international, who could be available cheaper than his value due to his contractual situation and Chelsea’s necessity to clear out players. However, it remains to be seen what price Chelsea will hope to get, though ESPN reports it could be as high as £35million, which would suit all parties. Kovacic could headline a number of top stars that could leave Chelsea, including Kai Havertz, N’Golo Kante and Mason Mount. The latter is keen on a move to Manchester United, who have already agreed personal terms. The Red Devils have opened talks with Chelsea over a transfer fee. Pochettino has already identified Manuel Ugarte and Moises Caicedo as potential replacements.
