He rejected a contract extension at Manchester City in the summer of 2020, with the German then returning to his native country to link up with Bayern for just shy of £40million with only one year remaining on his contract. Jerome Boateng was snapped up by City in 2010 after three impressive seasons at Hamburg saw him named in the Germany squad for that year’s World Cup in South Africa. He moved to Bayern after just one season in England and became one of the finest centre backs in the game, helping Bayern win nine Bundesliga titles and two Champions Leagues. Owen Hargreaves joined Bayern’s academy in 1996 when he was 16 and moved to Manchester City ahead of the 2011/12 season. Martin Demichelis joined Bayern from River Plate in 2003 and after spells with Malaga and Atletico Madrid, Demichelis joined compatriot and former boss Manuel Pellegrini at Manchester City in 2013. He was instrumental in City’s Premier League title run-in as the club pipped Liverpool to the league title.
