Luka Modric Signs One-Year Extension With Real Madrid
Real Madrid have secured the services of Luka Modric for another year, with the Croatian midfielder signing a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the Bernabeu until the summer of 2024.
Modric, 37, has been a key figure for Los Blancos since joining from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, making 488 appearances and winning three La Liga titles and five Champions League crowns. He was also awarded the Ballon d’Or in 2018 after helping Croatia reach the World Cup final.
The news of Modric’s new deal comes after he was linked with a move to Saudi Arabia’s Pro League. However, the former Spurs man has now committed his future to Real Madrid, taking to Twitter to post “Home Sweet Home” following the announcement of his new contract.
Modric Joins Kroos, Ceballos and Nacho in Extending Real Madrid Stay
Modric is the latest in a line of players to extend their stay at Real Madrid this summer, following Toni Kroos, Dani Ceballos and Nacho Fernandez in committing their future to the club.
The Croatian midfielder’s new deal adds further competition for places in Real Madrid’s midfield, with the club having already completed the high-profile addition of England international Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund.
Real Madrid Manager Zinedine Zidane Delighted With Modric Contract Extension
Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has expressed his delight at Modric’s decision to extend his stay at the club. Speaking after the announcement of Modric’s new deal, Zidane said: “Luka is an important player for us and he has been for many years. He is a leader on and off the pitch and I am delighted that he has decided to stay with us for another year.”
Modric’s Future Beyond 2024 Remains Unclear
While Modric has committed his future to Real Madrid until 2024, it remains unclear what his plans are beyond that date. The 37-year-old is still regarded as a key player for Los Blancos and could yet extend his stay at the Bernabeu beyond 2024.
However, with age not on his side, Modric may decide to hang up his boots and call time on his illustrious career at the end of his current contract. Only time will tell what the future holds for the Croatian midfielder.
