Newcastle Eye Shock Transfer Swoop for Hugo Lloris to Replace Injured Nick Pope
Newcastle United is reportedly considering a surprise move for Hugo Lloris as they look to find a replacement for the injured Nick Pope. Lloris, who has been frozen out of Ange Postecoglou’s squad at Tottenham, has yet to make an appearance for the club this season.
Pope, 31, is expected to be sidelined for up to five months after dislocating his shoulder in Newcastle’s recent 1-0 victory against Manchester United. Despite their recent 3-0 loss to Everton, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has expressed his intention to stick with second-choice goalkeeper Martin Dubravka.
However, following their 4-1 defeat against Tottenham and conceding seven goals in their last two games, Newcastle may be tempted to strengthen their goalkeeper options in the January transfer window. Lloris, who has been forgotten at Tottenham, is reportedly one of the contenders to fill Howe’s No.1 spot.
Newcastle previously attempted to secure a loan deal for Lloris on deadline day in September, but the Frenchman turned down the move. Lloris’ current contract expires in the summer of 2024 and he has yet to feature in any of Postecoglou’s matchday squads.
Tottenham is keen to offload Lloris in the new year in order to save funds. Alongside Lloris, Newcastle is also considering David de Gea, who recently left Manchester United after 12 years at the club, and Keylor Navas from Paris Saint-Germain, who spent the second half of last season on loan at Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle may opt for a loan deal until the end of the season, hoping for a speedy recovery for Pope. The club is actively searching for a suitable replacement to ensure their goalkeeping department remains strong.
