Liverpool’s under-21 team will face a familiar opponent in the upcoming season of the EFL Trophy, now known as the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. The draw took place on Thursday, and it revealed that Liverpool’s U21s will be pitted against Blackpool, managed by former Liverpool youth manager Neil Critchley.
Critchley spent seven years at Liverpool’s academy, including a stint as the U21s manager. He even took charge of a first-team fixture when Jurgen Klopp and his squad went on a mid-season break. Since leaving Liverpool, Critchley has had spells at Blackpool, Aston Villa, and QPR before returning to Blackpool.
Blackpool will not only be aiming for promotion to the Championship but also eyeing some silverware in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy. This competition has proven to be an invaluable experience for younger players, and Liverpool’s participation in it since 2019 has been beneficial for their academy graduates.
Last season, Liverpool’s U21s reached the knockouts of the competition for the first time, marking their first success in five attempts. Although they were eliminated at the first hurdle, the tournament provided valuable exposure to the demands of senior football. It has served as a launching pad for several academy graduates, such as Stefan Bajcetic, Bobby Clark, James McConnell, and Lewis Koumas.
In addition to Blackpool, Crewe Alexandra and Harrogate Town from League Two are also part of Group E in the tournament. The group stage matches will begin in September, and Liverpool will be among 16 Premier League and Championship clubs with a youth team competing in the Bristol Street Motors Trophy.
Overall, this tournament offers Liverpool’s young players an opportunity to gain experience and showcase their talents against senior opposition. It not only provides a chance for them to develop their skills but also brings attention to potential future stars emerging from Liverpool’s esteemed academy.
