Liverpool’s transfer stance on Matheus Nunes amid Thiago injury setback

Liverpool remain confident they can cope with a growing midfield injury crisis and are unlikely to move for Sporting Lisbon’s Matheus Nunes, despite fresh speculation linking him with a move to Merseyside.

The Reds raided Sporting’s rivals Benfica earlier this summer when they broke their transfer record to sign striker Darwin Nunez, but have otherwise kept their powder dry.

Jurgen Klopp’s side began the new season in slightly underwhelming fashion, however, twice coming from behind to force a 2-2 draw at Fulham last Saturday.

With Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain already on the sidelines, Klopp could ill-afford another injury setback but a hamstring injury suffered by Thiago could rule him out for the next six weeks.

Klopp, however, is reluctant to bolster his midfield, according to The Times, although A Bolo claim Liverpool are preparing a bid for Nunes, whose contract is said to include a £51million release clause.

Indeed, the German gave an indication of his intentions following the draw at Craven Cottage which left him reliant on the likes of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho and James Milner.

He said: ‘I know what will now come up, it’s clear,’ Klopp added. ‘We said we don’t need a midfielder because we have enough – and we actually have enough.

‘But the problem now is we get punished for something that is not our responsibility really because things like this can happen.

‘Nobody could image that Curtis [Jones] gets the thing he gets; it is nothing serious but he is a young boy and it is a kind of stress reaction.

‘Bodies are like this. Naby [Keita] is only ill and he will now be back definitely next week again.

‘[The injury to] Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain happened early and now with Thiago that is, of course, not good and we will see.

‘Look, a transfer must make sense now and in the long-term; we have midfielders, we have still enough midfielders.

‘It is not that we lack midfielders, but it’s just some of them are injured. This is not a good situation, I don’t like it at all, but we have to see how we react on that – but for sure we not panicking.’

Liverpool are, however, planning on handing a new contract to teenage midfielder Harvey Elliott as a sign of his growing stature.

The England Under-21 international made a significant breakthrough at the start of last season before he sustained a serious long-term ankle injury.

Elliott was used sparingly by Klopp during the run-in, despite his return to full fitness, but he is likely to play a key role this term and will be pushing to be part of Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad.
