Liverpool’s New Leading Candidate for Managerial Position Revealed
Liverpool Football Club is on the hunt for a new manager, with Xabi Alonso emerging as the top contender to succeed Jurgen Klopp. However, the club has also identified a surprise second choice in case Alonso rejects the offer. While Liverpool is pushing hard to secure Alonso’s services, there is no guarantee that the Spaniard will accept the job.
Amidst Liverpool’s interest in Alonso, Bayern Munich has also expressed their interest in the former Liverpool midfielder. Additionally, there is a possibility that Alonso may choose to remain at his current club, Bayer Leverkusen, especially if they win the Bundesliga title.
Despite considering other candidates like Brighton manager Roberto De Zerbi, the Independent’s Miguel Delaney reveals that Sporting CP’s Ruben Amorim is the “main contender” alongside Alonso. Delaney explains that while Alonso is widely seen as the candidate Liverpool will push hardest to get, other clubs are also vying for his signature.
If Alonso rejects a move to Anfield, Amorim emerges as the strongest candidate for the Liverpool manager position. Described as a “likelier option” than De Zerbi, Amorim has attracted interest from major clubs due to his impressive work in restoring Sporting CP to glory after decades of dominance by Benfica and Porto.
Although Amorim’s level of interest may not match that of Alonso, his situation is comparable. Sporting CP is currently competing for the Primeira Liga title and is on par with Benfica in terms of points. In his first season in charge in 2020/21, Amorim led Sporting CP to their first title in 19 years. He also won the Taca da Liga three times in a row with SC Braga and Sporting CP.
While Alonso would undoubtedly bring a higher profile and more gravitas to the role, Amorim is among the most convincing alternatives. Liverpool’s boardroom seems to recognize this, and the success of Sporting CP this season is certainly one to watch.
Sporting CP faces Young Boys in the Europa League playoffs, with a 3-1 lead from the first leg. If they progress to the last 16, Sporting CP could join Liverpool and Bayer Leverkusen in the next round.
As Liverpool continues its search for a new manager, Xabi Alonso remains the overwhelming favorite, but Ruben Amorim has emerged as a strong alternative. With the anticipation of a highly competitive manager market in the summer, Liverpool will need to act swiftly to secure their preferred candidate.
