Wataru Endo Reveals Liverpool’s Pursuit of Moises Caicedo Before Signing Him
Wataru Endo, the newly signed player for Liverpool, has recently shared his surprise at the club’s pursuit of Moises Caicedo before ultimately signing him as an alternative option. The Japan captain made his debut for Jurgen Klopp’s side as a substitute in their 3-1 victory over Bournemouth on Saturday, reflecting on the “crazy” week leading up to his transfer.
Endo, who completed a £16.2 million move from Stuttgart, had been closely following Liverpool’s search for a holding midfielder this summer. He assumed that the pursuit had ended when the club agreed on a £111 million fee with Brighton for Caicedo. However, the Ecuador international opted to join Chelsea instead, leaving Liverpool to explore other options.
“To be honest, I followed Liverpool’s news and their pursuit of midfielders, specifically a No 6,” Endo said. “I thought Caicedo had gone to Liverpool! (Laughs). So when I heard he went to Chelsea, I just thought ‘maybe.’ I thought maybe they needed experienced midfielders or something like that because Henderson and Fabinho had moved. I thought there might be a chance.”
Endo acknowledged that top clubs often prioritize young talent but saw this as his only opportunity to join Liverpool since they typically target younger players. He expressed his determination to make the most of this chance and prove himself at the club.
The 30-year-old midfielder started the week preparing for Stuttgart’s Bundesliga opener against Bochum when he received a call from his agent that changed everything. He was made aware of Liverpool’s interest only three or four days ago and had to make a quick decision. Playing in the Premier League had always been his dream, so he couldn’t turn down the opportunity.
“I was getting ready to play in the Bundesliga. Now I’m playing here at Anfield in the Premier League in front of all these fans, it is crazy,” Endo said. Despite having limited time for training with his new team, he relied on his experience as a player to adapt quickly to the situation.
Endo sought advice from his international teammates, former Liverpool attacker Takumi Minamino and Arsenal’s Takehiro Tomiyasu, about what to expect at Anfield. Their insights provided him with valuable information about the team and the Premier League.
In his debut match for Liverpool, Endo came off the bench shortly after the hour mark. This substitution followed an eventful few minutes that saw Alexis Mac Allister being sent off and Diogo Jota scoring to give Liverpool a 3-1 lead. Endo expressed his joy and gratitude for the opportunity to play at Anfield, describing it as an amazing experience with a great atmosphere.
When asked about the instructions he received from Klopp, Endo mentioned that the manager told him to play as he did in the Bundesliga and to maintain his usual style of play. However, he acknowledged that the physicality and tempo of the Premier League are different and require some adjustments. He emphasized the need to work hard, adapt to the new environment, and continue improving his performance.
Wataru Endo’s signing has brought excitement to Liverpool fans, who are eager to see how he will contribute to the team’s success. As an experienced midfielder, Endo brings a wealth of knowledge and skills to the squad. With his determination and willingness to adapt, he has the potential to become a valuable asset for Liverpool in their upcoming matches.
