Liverpool are reportedly considering a move for Juventus winger Federico Chiesa as the transfer window comes to a close. While a winger was not a priority for the club this summer, sporting director Richard Hughes had mentioned that they would be “opportunistic” in the market.
The interest in Chiesa comes amid Barcelona’s struggles to reach an agreement for the 27-year-old. Fabrizio Romano broke the news, stating that Liverpool had made an initial approach, and Paul Joyce confirmed that the club is considering their interest.
Chiesa has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, with reports in 2021 suggesting that the club had attempted to sign him while he was at Fiorentina. Although he is currently contracted with Juventus until 2025, the club is open to negotiations. His availability at a relatively low price, around £12 million, could be appealing to Liverpool. However, it is worth noting that Chiesa has had some injury concerns, including a torn ACL in the previous season and subsequent muscle fatigue and soft-tissue injuries.
Fans have had mixed reactions to the potential signing, with some comparing it to the acquisition of Xherdan Shaqiri or Arthur. While some believe that Chiesa would be a good addition to the squad, providing depth and experience without expecting to start every week, others question whether he would be a significant improvement to the first XI.
Despite the divided opinions, many fans are open to the idea of signing Chiesa at a low cost and view him as a backup option for Mohamed Salah who can also play across the attacking line.
Liverpool’s interest in Chiesa indicates that the club is actively working on signings before the deadline. It would be a missed opportunity if they fail to secure any new additions. If Liverpool can minimize the risk involved in a cut-price deal for Chiesa, it could be considered an opportunistic signing. However, time is running out to finalize any deals before the window closes.
