Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah delivered a standout performance in his team’s thrilling 4-2 victory against Newcastle. The match, which took place on New Year’s Day, saw Salah shine as the best player on the field. Despite missing a penalty in the first half, Salah scored two goals and provided an assist, causing nightmares for Newcastle’s defenders with his dribbling and movement.
Salah’s creativity was praised by Ian Doyle of the Liverpool Echo, who described his assist for Cody Gakpo’s goal as “superb.” TIA’s James Nalton also commended Salah for his performance, stating that he more than made up for his early miss and wastefulness. This exceptional display came just before Salah heads off to participate in the Africa Cup of Nations.
Luis Diaz was another standout player for Liverpool, earning a rating of 7.6. This performance marked one of his best in recent months. The Colombian forward was a constant threat throughout the match, although one of his goals was disallowed for offside.
Wataru Endo received a rating of 7.5 for his role at the base of midfield. The 30-year-old Japanese midfielder showcased his ability to keep the team ticking over nicely, completing 91 percent of his passes and making important defensive contributions with two interceptions and three recoveries.
However, not all Liverpool players had a stellar night. Goalkeeper Alisson and forward Darwin Nunez both received a rating of 6.4, the lowest among their teammates. While Alisson couldn’t be blamed for either of Newcastle’s goals, Doyle described Nunez’s performance as a “real mixed bag” at Anfield.
Overall, Salah’s exceptional display and contributions were crucial in Liverpool’s victory against Newcastle. As he prepares to depart for international duty, Liverpool will undoubtedly miss his presence on the field during the rest of January.
