On Saturday, May 6, 2023, Liverpool will host Brentford at Anfield in the Premier League (35). With Man United losing to Brighton on Thursday night, a win for Liverpool would take them just one point behind fourth place, albeit having played twice more. Brentford, who have gone six games without a win before claiming six points from the last six on offer, are aiming to stop the Reds from winning their sixth consecutive match. Jurgen Klopp’s side will be looking to make it three wins in a week, however they may be without Diogo Jota and Jordan Henderson due to injury. Brentford have had a remarkable second season back in the top flight, comfortably securing safety and even pushing for European football. They have already beaten Man City, Man United and Liverpool this season and are currently ninth in the Premier League, four points behind Aston Villa and Tottenham.
Despite the anti-establishment views of many Liverpool supporters, the club have announced they will play ‘God Save the King’ at Anfield on Saturday, as a result of the Premier League‘s recommendation. Andy Robertson and Cody Gakpo should return to the starting lineup, while Harvey Elliott and James Milner will compete for a spot in right midfield if Henderson isn’t fit to play. Darwin Nunez could also start if Diogo Jota is unfit.
Brentford manager Thomas Frank has praised the atmosphere at Liverpool’s stadium, saying “it is probably the most difficult away ground to go to”. He also praised Klopp for his success in recent years and said Liverpool “have been quite unlucky” not to win more. Ivan Toney is the Bees’ key player and will be looking to cause problems for Liverpool on the break.
James Milner is set to leave for Brighton in the summer and has just four matches left of his Liverpool career. Klopp has praised his importance in Liverpool’s success, saying that “nothing in the last seven-and-a-half years would have happened without James Milner”.
Anthony Taylor is set to referee his fifth Liverpool match of the season with the Reds unbeaten in the last 11 matches that he has taken charge of. The match will be live on Sky Sports Premier League with coverage starting from 5pm (BST) and TIA’s matchday live blog will be up and running from 4.45pm.
