Liverpool U21s secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory against Sunderland U21s at the Eppleton Colliery Welfare Ground. The match marked James Balagizi’s return to action for the young Reds after a year-long absence, and he made an immediate impact by scoring a goal and providing an assist.
Balagizi had a challenging loan spell last season, with limited playing time at Wigan and Kilmarnock. Despite expectations of another loan move this summer, the 20-year-old decided to stay at Liverpool. This decision paid off as he shone in his first competitive appearance of the season.
Kieran Morrison, a promising 17-year-old, played a crucial role in Liverpool’s victory. His quick feet led to the opening goal, as he created a shooting opportunity that Balagizi calmly finished with his left foot. Morrison then turned provider, receiving a pass from Balagizi and bending it into the bottom corner.
Sunderland managed to pull a goal back through Trey Samuel-Ogunsuyi, but Liverpool went into halftime with a 2-1 lead. Coach Barry Lewtas would have been pleased with the performance of player-coach Jay Spearing, who showcased his experience with a series of well-timed tackles. Captain Dominic Corness also impressed in midfield, while 18-year-old Ranel Young led the line with distinction.
Young sealed the victory for Liverpool with a superb solo effort, dribbling past challenges before slotting the ball into the net. Sunderland’s Tommy Watson scored a late goal during stoppage time, but Liverpool held on to secure all three points.
There were concerns over the fitness of defenders Wellity Lucky and Lee Jonas, who were substituted late in the game due to cramp. However, it is hoped that their injuries are not serious.
The victory against Sunderland is a promising start to the season for Liverpool U21s. With talented players like Balagizi, Morrison, and Young in their ranks, they will be looking to build on this performance in their next match against Derby.
