Liverpool appear to have already made a decision on Leighton Clarkson’s future, with the club ready to listen to offers from clubs in England and Scotland. Clarkson had a successful loan spell at Aberdeen last season, playing 38 times and scoring six goals and laying on another eight. This has led to speculation over a possible return to Liverpool as a homegrown player, however the club are now expected to let him depart on a permanent transfer. Aberdeen are said to have a broad agreement in place, but there is also interest from the Championship, with West Brom and QPR both suitors in the past. Reading are also pursuing the versatile midfielder, but their drop down to League One makes any deal unlikely.
Jurgen Klopp is overseeing a rebuild of his midfield ranks this summer, including the signing of Alexis Mac Allister, leaving no room for Clarkson despite him now qualifying as a homegrown player in the Premier League. With the departures of James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the Reds are decidedly short in that regard, with only Jordan Henderson, Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Curtis Jones as senior homegrown players. Klopp could decide to retain Rhys Williams or Sepp van den Berg to fill further slots in the Premier League squad, but it is more likely that they will follow Clarkson out.
