Liverpool invested a lot in Taiwo Awoniyi when they signed him from the Imperial Soccer Academy in 2015, but it wasn’t until he was sold that he found success in the Premier League. Work permit issues meant he had to go on seven loans in six years before he eventually found his feet with Union Berlin in 2020/21. This led to a £17.5 million transfer to Nottingham Forest last summer, where he has since proven to be a crucial part of their fight against relegation. In 30 appearances, Awoniyi scored 11 goals and provided one assist, with six goals in his last four games. His conversion rate of one goal for every 3.5 shots (excluding penalties) was the best in the Premier League, equalling Jadon Sancho’s record. Despite a groin injury limiting his game time to 1,411 minutes, he still managed to score 10 times in 27 league games. He scored in eight different Premier League games and put Forest 1-0 up in each of them, the most for a newly promoted club since Andy Johnson for Crystal Palace in 2004/05 (nine). Four of his goals were match-winners, with only seven players netting more across the English top flight. Liverpool received around £1.5 million of the fee Forest paid Union due to a sell-on clause, making it a £7.5 million profit upon their initial investment. Now Jurgen Klopp and his staff may be wondering whether it was wise to sell after all.
