Liverpool’s quadruple hopes have been dealt a blow with key midfielder Fabinho reportedly in a race against time to return for the Champions League final against Real Madrid.

A hamstring strain picked up in the 30th minute of the Reds’ 2-1 Premier League win over Aston Villa will see the Brazilian miss the FA Cup final against Chelsea, and Liverpool’s two remaining league fixtures, according to The Times.

Jurgen Klopp’s side need to win their remaining league matches against Southampton and Wolves and hope Manchester City drop points if they are to pick up their 20th league title, but it looks like they will have to do this without Fabinho.

The defensive midfielder signalled to be substituted in the first half of the triumph at Villa Park, but walked off of his own accord before being replaced by captain Jordan Henderson.

Henderson is used to playing ahead of Fabinho in Liverpool’s midfield three, but looked accomplished in the defensive role.

Klopp initially offered a reassuring update to supporters after the game, saying the 28-year-old was ‘positive’ about the injury that took him out of the game.

“I don’t know [how bad it is]. He felt the muscle, not too much,” Klopp said.

“He is quite positive but I’m not sure what I can make of that, to be honest. We will see.

“He has a good feeling and that gives me a better feeling than I had and I took him off. What that means, I don’t know yet.

“I think the rest came through without problems. Robbo [Andy Robertson] was not in the squad today because I wanted to give him just a rest at home and bring another striker into the squad if we needed, that’s it.

“Apart from that, we should be fine.”

However, despite the latest worrying news that Fabinho will to miss the first three of Liverpool’s four remaining games, Brazil’s physical trainer, Fabio Mahseredjian, expressed some positivity.

The midfielder has been included in Brazil’s June international fixtures, and Mahseredjian said: “We don’t have all the information yet, but we are optimistic that he will reach the Champions League final.”
