Jorg Schmadtke to Step Back as Liverpool Sporting Director
Liverpool Football Club is set to search for a new long-term sporting director as Jorg Schmadtke plans to step back from his role at Anfield. Schmadtke has been serving as the interim sporting director since May, initially signing a one-year contract. While there were initial concerns about his lack of input, a successful summer transfer window has changed perceptions.
Plans to Step Back
According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Schmadtke himself is planning to step back from the role. He will continue to fulfill his duties through the winter transfer window, but after that, the collaboration is expected to end. Both the club and Schmadtke are reportedly very satisfied with their working relationship.
Search for a Successor
With Schmadtke stepping back, Liverpool will now need to find a full-time successor for the sporting director position. While it remains to be seen who will be targeted for the role, a move for Max Eberl, who recently left RB Leipzig, is unlikely as he is set to take an executive job at Bayern Munich. Christoph Freund, who had been linked with Liverpool, joined Bayern as sporting director earlier this year.
Previous links with Paul Mitchell and Sven Mislintat have been downplayed by Liverpool, and Tim Steidten has joined West Ham as technical director.
The search for a new sporting director will be crucial for Liverpool as they continue their regeneration and aim for long-term success.
