Liverpool’s Search for a New Manager: Barcelona and Bayern Munich Also Interested
As the end of the season approaches, Liverpool finds itself in need of a new manager. With Jurgen Klopp set to leave Anfield, the club has been on the hunt for a suitable replacement. One name that has emerged as a top candidate is Xabi Alonso, the current Bayern Leverkusen boss. His impressive unbeaten season with Leverkusen has caught the attention of major European clubs, including Barcelona and Bayern Munich.
Alonso, who is lined up to win Leverkusen’s first-ever title, has become highly sought after in the football world. His success has made him a popular choice for many clubs, including Manchester United and Real Madrid. However, should Alonso opt to go elsewhere, Sporting Lisbon’s Ruben Amorim has also emerged as a contender for the Liverpool managerial position.
Amorim, who has excelled at Sporting Lisbon, has been able to restore the club’s success after decades of domination by Porto and Benfica. Compared to Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, who has also been considered as an alternative to Alonso, Amorim is now the more favorable choice. Despite his relatively short managerial experience and never having coached outside of Portugal, he has gained popularity with Sporting Lisbon.
Amorim’s journey in football began as a player for Lisbon rivals Benfica. As a former midfielder, he made 154 appearances for the Primera Liga giants and earned 14 caps for Portugal. After retiring from playing in 2017, he started his coaching career at Primera Liga side Casa Pia. He then went on to become the head coach of Braga B before taking charge of the first team in December 2019. His success continued as he led Braga to win the 2020 Taca da Liga.
In March 2020, Amorim was appointed as the manager of Sporting Lisbon in a record-breaking managerial transfer worth £8.65 million. He guided the club to a double victory in the Taca da Liga and the Primeira Liga, ending the latter’s 19-year league title drought. His achievements have solidified his reputation as a talented and promising manager.
With Liverpool in search of a new manager, both Alonso and Amorim present intriguing options. While Alonso’s success at Leverkusen has made him a highly sought-after candidate, Amorim’s achievements at Sporting Lisbon cannot be overlooked. Liverpool will have to carefully consider which manager best fits their vision for the future. As the football world eagerly awaits their decision, all eyes will be on Anfield to see who will be chosen to lead the Reds into the next chapter of their storied history.
