Liverpool Recalls Owen Beck from Loan Spell at Dundee Following Injuries to Tsimikas and Robertson
Liverpool Football Club has made the decision to recall 21-year-old left-back Owen Beck from his successful loan spell at Dundee. This move comes as a result of long-term injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson, leaving Joe Gomez as the current first-choice left-back for the Reds.
Robertson has been sidelined since October after dislocating his shoulder while on duty with the Scotland national team. Tsimikas, on the other hand, suffered a broken collarbone in a recent match against Arsenal.
Although Gomez has performed admirably in the absence of Robertson and Tsimikas, there were hopes among supporters that Liverpool would bring in reinforcements during the January transfer window. However, instead of making a new signing, Liverpool has chosen to recall Beck from his loan spell at Dundee.
Beck played a crucial role during his time in Scotland, making 20 starts in league and cup competitions and playing the full 90 minutes in every game. He scored two goals and provided two assists in 17 appearances in the Scottish Premiership, only missing one game due to a minor injury. Primarily deployed as a left wing-back, Beck is now expected to rejoin Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad and provide much-needed cover.
Compared to Luke Chambers and Calum Scanlon, who are both young and inexperienced, Beck brings more experience and has already been involved with Liverpool’s senior setup for several years. He made two substitute appearances during the 2021/22 season, both in the Carabao Cup, including the dramatic penalty shootout victory over Leicester in the quarter-finals.
In addition to Beck, Liverpool has also recalled Fabio Carvalho from his loan at RB Leipzig, and Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips are set to return this week. While Beck is likely to take up immediate first-team duties as backup to Gomez, there is a possibility that he may go out on another loan before the end of January.
Liverpool has a busy schedule this month, with six matches scheduled and a potential seventh if they advance in the FA Cup. Beck could potentially start in the FA Cup third-round tie against Arsenal.
