Liverpool Midfielder James Balagizi’s Loan Spell at Wigan Hampered by Injury
Liverpool midfielder James Balagizi’s loan spell at Wigan has been marred by a long-term injury, potentially leading to an early return. Balagizi joined Wigan on a season-long loan after an impressive performance with Crawley last season, where he scored three goals in 16 games.
Disappointing Time at Wigan
Unfortunately, Balagizi’s time at the DW Stadium has been disappointing. The 20-year-old has only played four times at the senior level and has yet to start a game in the league. Manager Shaun Maloney has left him out of the matchday squad for all but one of the last 13 games in League One, coinciding with Wigan’s run of just one defeat in eight matches.
The Injury Setback
Adding to his woes, Balagizi suffered a hamstring injury during training, which will keep him out of action for at least six weeks. Maloney expressed his concern about the injury, stating that it doesn’t look good. The setback has raised the possibility of Liverpool terminating the loan deal in January.
Uncertain Future
Maloney mentioned that the decision on Balagizi’s return to Liverpool for treatment will be left to the player and the club. This injury comes after a similar issue last year that required surgery and ended Balagizi’s loan spell at Crawley.
Potential Recall by Liverpool
While there is no official confirmation yet, it is believed that Liverpool may recall Balagizi in January. With his current lack of playing time and the upcoming recovery period, returning to the U21s for the second half of the season may be more beneficial for his development.
Injury Woes for Balagizi
Balagizi’s injury problems have hindered his chances of breaking into Jurgen Klopp’s first-team squad in the past. An arm issue kept him out of pre-season training in 2021, and he has yet to make his senior debut despite being named on the bench for Carabao Cup and FA Cup matches.
Other Potential Recalls
Balagizi may not be the only Liverpool loanee facing a potential recall. Decisions will also need to be made regarding Fabio Carvalho, Rhys Williams, and James Norris, who are all lacking game time.
