Liverpool Still Looking to Strengthen Squad Before Transfer Window Closes

Liverpool manager Arne Slot has expressed the club’s desire to strengthen their squad before the transfer window closes. Despite attempting to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, the Spain midfielder ultimately decided against the move. This means that Liverpool is the only Premier League side that has not made a major signing this summer.

Slot acknowledges the challenge of finding players who can genuinely strengthen their already strong squad. He mentions that Zubimendi was one such player, but unfortunately, he chose not to come. However, Slot remains optimistic about the players they have, highlighting Wataru Endo’s strong performance during pre-season. Despite this setback, the club’s sporting director, Richard Hughes, continues his efforts to bolster the squad.

Slot recognizes the difficulty of attracting new signings, especially when a player decides not to join. He commends Hughes for his efforts in trying to bring Zubimendi to the club, but ultimately respects the player’s decision. Slot’s focus now is on the upcoming Premier League game against Ipswich Town, where he will make his debut as Liverpool manager.

While Liverpool may not have made any major signings this summer, Slot emphasizes the positive aspect of retaining their current players. He commends the team’s performance under former manager Jurgen Klopp, who left the club after a successful 2023-24 season. Slot acknowledges the competitiveness of the Premier League and the strengthened squads of other teams but remains hopeful for the challenge ahead.

In terms of departures, Liverpool has sold forward Fabio Carvalho to Brentford for £27.5m. Additionally, defender Joel Matip, midfielder Thiago Alcantara, and goalkeeper Adrian have also left the club. When questioned about the impact of not adding new players to the squad, Slot rejects the notion that it weakens the team. He believes that staying the same can still lead to improvement through training and development.

Slot and Hughes continue their efforts to strengthen the squad, always on the lookout for potential signings who can genuinely enhance the team. However, their immediate focus is on the upcoming match against Ipswich Town. Despite the challenges they face, Liverpool remains determined to build upon the success of the previous season and compete against the strong teams in the Premier League.
