Liverpool had several players out on loan during the 2023/24 season, and as the season comes to a close, it’s time to assess how they performed and what lies ahead for them.
Two players, Fabio Carvalho and Tyler Morton, saw their loan spells end as their club, Hull, fell just short of a Championship play-off place. Carvalho had a successful spell at Hull, scoring nine goals in 19 starts after an unproductive time at Leipzig. Morton also had a productive campaign, making 40 appearances and contributing with three goals and five assists. Both players will now return to Liverpool and look forward to a fresh start under new management at Anfield.
Another loanee, Nat Phillips, also saw his season come to an end as Cardiff finished 12th in the Championship. Phillips joined Cardiff in January after spending half a season with Celtic. While it may not have been the ideal season for Phillips, he will have gained valuable experience playing in a competitive league.
Several other Liverpool loanees have also finished their loan spells and are now preparing for their summer break. Billy Koumetio, Adam Lewis, James Norris, Luca Stephenson, and Luke Chambers have all completed their respective campaigns. Chambers had a memorable season, returning from injury to start Wigan’s last two games, scoring and assisting in those matches. This season also saw him make his Liverpool debut.
However, there are two players who are still in promotion contention with their loan clubs. Calvin Ramsay is with Bolton and Harvey Davies is with Crewe, both fighting for promotion from League One and League Two respectively. While Ramsay has not played in the last 16 games and Davies in the previous 11, they will hope that being in a pressurized environment will benefit them in the long run.
Finally, there are several Liverpool loanees whose seasons are still ongoing. Sepp van den Berg, Owen Beck, Marcelo Pitaluga, Dominic Corness, Jakub Ojrzynski, Vitezslav Jaros, and Anderson Arroyo are all still involved with their loan clubs. They will continue to gain experience and develop their skills as they look to make an impact in the future.
Overall, Liverpool’s loanees have had varying degrees of success during the 2023/24 season. While some have impressed and will return to Liverpool with newfound confidence, others will reflect on their experiences and look to learn from them. Regardless of their individual situations, the loan system provides valuable opportunities for young players to gain playing time and develop their skills.
