Nico Williams, the talented winger from Athletic Club, has been making waves with his performances for Spain at Euro 2024. Liverpool is reportedly interested in securing a bargain deal for the 21-year-old player.
Williams has been a key starter for Spain in both of their Group B matches at this summer’s Euros. His delivery from the left flank played a crucial role in securing a win against Italy, as one of his crosses led to an own goal by Italy defender Riccardo Calafiori, who happens to be on Liverpool’s radar.
The young winger has been impressive statistically as well. According to FotMob, Williams attempted the most dribbles (10), created the most chances (four), and had the most touches in the opposition’s box (eight) among all players. His performance has caught the attention of many, including Liverpool.
Spanish reporter Pol Ballus from The Athletic has revealed that Williams has been discussed as a potential target for Liverpool, particularly if they are in need of a winger for Arne Slot’s new project. Williams’ release clause of £47 million makes him an attractive option for the Reds.
Williams, who is the brother and teammate of former Liverpool target Inaki Williams, had an impressive season with Athletic Club, contributing eight goals and 19 assists in 37 games. While he primarily operates from the left wing, where he has also earned his most recent caps for Spain, he has spent a significant portion of his career playing on the right. This versatility could make him an appealing choice for Slot and Liverpool’s sporting director Richard Hughes, who are both looking to strengthen their wide options this summer.
Although Barcelona has also shown interest in Williams, their focus seems to be on Luis Diaz. If Diaz were to leave Anfield, it could open up a spot on the left flank for Williams. However, Slot may have other plans for that role, with Cody Gakpo being considered for a switch back to his natural position. Regardless, Liverpool’s priority remains finding a player for the right flank, and given Williams’ experience in that role, there is a chance that the discussions surrounding him could progress further.
