Liverpool’s head coach, Arne Slot, has expressed the club’s intention to strengthen their squad during the summer transfer window. Despite being the only Premier League club yet to make a signing, Slot remains hopeful that they will be able to make additions soon. Following Liverpool’s recent friendlies, Slot acknowledged the challenge of strengthening the squad after witnessing their strong performances.
Slot inherited a talented team and believes that any additions will only be made if they genuinely improve the squad. While Liverpool emerged victorious with a 4-1 win against Sevilla and a goalless draw against Las Palmas, Slot utilized a total of 30 players across the two matches. It is evident that Liverpool is looking to bolster their defensive midfield position, with Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi being targeted as a potential signing.
When asked about the reports linking Liverpool to Zubimendi, Slot laughed before stating that numerous names can be thrown around in such situations. However, if Liverpool is serious about signing Zubimendi, they will have to pay his buyout clause, which amounts to £51.5 million.
On the topic of Fabio Carvalho, Slot provided some clarity. It was reported on Saturday that the Portuguese midfielder has accepted a deal to transfer from Liverpool to Brentford for a fee of up to £27.5 million, including add-ons. Slot confirmed that there is an agreement in place but mentioned that he has not personally spoken to the club about it. He emphasized that his focus has been on the game and, therefore, is uncertain about the current status of Carvalho.
In terms of player involvement, Ben Doak, who has been linked with a move away, played the full match against Las Palmas, indicating a potential future at Liverpool. On the other hand, Sepp van den Berg did not feature, while Nat Phillips was chosen as the starting center-back in the second match.
With just six days remaining before their Premier League opener against Ipswich, Liverpool is expected to be active in the transfer market. Fans can anticipate significant developments off the pitch in the coming days as Liverpool looks to strengthen their squad ahead of the new season.
