Liverpool Goalkeeper Alisson Becker Rejects Move to Saudi Arabia, Expresses Happiness at Anfield
Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker has revealed that he turned down a move to Saudi Arabia this summer because he is “really happy” at Anfield. The Brazilian shot-stopper joined the Reds in 2018 in a record-breaking £66.8m move from Roma, making him the most expensive goalkeeper in the world at the time.
Alisson, 31, has enjoyed tremendous success with Liverpool, winning the Premier League, Champions League, FA Cup, EFL Cup, and Club World Cup during his 261 appearances for the club. While his teammates Fabinho, Roberto Firmino, and Jordan Henderson have all departed for Saudi Arabia in 2023, Alisson remains committed to staying on Merseyside.
Speaking about his decision, Alisson stated, “I want to honor my contract and finish my contract here or make a new one. I am really happy here. My family is happy.” The goalkeeper’s contract with Liverpool runs until 2026, and he has no intention of leaving before then.
Alisson also revealed that the financial aspect was not the driving factor behind his decision. He admitted to being attracted by the numbers that other players were receiving in Saudi Arabia, but he emphasized that his happiness and his family’s well-being were more important considerations.
The Brazilian goalkeeper acknowledged that the interest from Saudi Arabia was tempting, but he believes that “now is not the time” for a move. Alisson is focused on continuing his success with Liverpool and contributing to the team’s ambitions in the future.
Liverpool, meanwhile, is taking steps to ensure they have adequate backup for Alisson. The club is closing in on the signing of Valencia goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili in a deal worth around £30m. The 23-year-old Georgia international will provide competition and support for Alisson, reinforcing the club’s commitment to maintaining a strong squad.
Alisson expressed his approval of Liverpool’s pursuit of Mamardashvili, stating, “I knew about that [Mamardashvili] before it came out on social media, and that is a good message for me because the club cares about what I think.” He appreciates the club’s efforts to involve him in the decision-making process.
Ultimately, Alisson’s loyalty to Liverpool and his satisfaction with life at Anfield are the determining factors in his decision to reject the move to Saudi Arabia. As long as he has his contract and remains happy at the club, he has no intention of leaving. Liverpool fans can rest assured that their star goalkeeper will continue to be a vital part of their success on the pitch.
