On a sunny day in Merseyside, Liverpool Women hosted Man United Women in their final WSL match of the season. In front of their biggest-ever crowd at Prenton Park, the Reds were narrowly defeated 1-0 by the league’s runners-up. The game was rendered meaningless to the title race as Chelsea had already won it. The first half was largely uneventful due to multiple injury stoppages, but Rachel Laws pulled off a spectacular save to keep the game goalless. The second half saw Man United break through after 72 minutes thanks to Lucia Garcia’s swivel and sharp finish. Liverpool showed good skill and acceleration on the break but their end product was lacking. Substitute appearances were made for Rhiannon Roberts, Leighanne Robe and Carla Humphrey in their last matches for the club. Despite the defeat, Liverpool can be proud of their performance against the league’s runners-up and can take solace in the fact that Man United did not win the league on Merseyside.
