Liverpool’s interest in Schalke midfielder Assan Ouedraogo has been a topic of discussion for several months now. Initially linked with a move to Anfield in October, Liverpool were among a number of clubs, including Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Brighton, and Everton, who were reportedly interested in the 18-year-old wonderkid.
Since then, talks between Ouedraogo’s camp and various clubs have taken place, with Liverpool being one of the teams to make contact with his representatives. According to Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg, Liverpool, along with Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Newcastle, have all reached out to gauge Ouedraogo’s interest in a move to the Premier League.
However, recent reports suggest that Bayern Munich, who were seen as the frontrunners for Ouedraogo’s signature, have decided not to pursue a deal with Schalke. Plettenberg revealed that Bayern had “officially informed” the midfielder that they would not be signing him. This opens up the possibility of a move to Liverpool, who can activate Ouedraogo’s £12 million release clause.
The release clause is exclusive to Premier League clubs and must be activated by mid-June, providing a clear deadline for interested parties. Ouedraogo made his debut for Schalke’s first team in July and has already made a significant impact. He became the club’s youngest-ever player and goalscorer when he found the back of the net in a 5-3 defeat to Hamburg.
Throughout his young career, Ouedraogo has been utilized in various positions but is now settling into the role of a midfielder. Comparisons have even been drawn between him and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso. James Westwood of GOAL described Ouedraogo as a “natural No. 8″ with an eye for goal and incisive passing range.
Despite his towering height of 6’3”, Ouedraogo possesses surprising nimbleness and is an accomplished ball carrier. He excels at breaking through defensive lines, utilizing his explosive pace, close ball control, and direct style of play. Additionally, he poses a significant threat from corners and has demonstrated his ability to score with both feet.
If Ouedraogo continues on his current trajectory, there is a strong possibility that he will earn his first cap for Germany in the near future. Whether Liverpool’s interest in Ouedraogo will materialize into a concrete move remains uncertain. However, with the deadline approaching, we may soon discover if Ouedraogo will be joining the ranks at Anfield.
