Anderson Arroyo: Liverpool’s Forgotten Defender Embarks on Seventh Loan in Five Years
Anderson Arroyo, the 23-year-old Colombian defender, has once again been loaned out by Liverpool, prolonging his wait for a first-team debut. This time, Arroyo has joined Spanish second division side Andorra on a season-long loan, marking his seventh loan move in just five years.
Arroyo initially joined Liverpool in 2018 from Colombian club Fortaleza after impressing at the U20s South American Youth Championship. However, he was immediately loaned out to Mallorca on a two-year deal, where he played for the B team. Unfortunately, the loan deal was canceled, and Arroyo moved on to Gent in Belgium. Despite the transfer, he never made an appearance for the club.
The Colombian defender then had stints at Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic and Spanish third-tier club Salamanca. Most recently, he played for Spanish side Mirandes during the 2021/22 campaign. Arroyo’s constant loan moves have prevented him from establishing himself at Liverpool and gaining valuable experience in the Premier League.
Despite his lack of playing time at Liverpool, Arroyo recently signed a new contract with the club, extending his stay until 2025. However, there is a possibility that Liverpool may decide to cash in on him before then. The club’s decision to loan him out once again suggests that they are still unsure about his long-term potential.
Arroyo spent the previous season at Alaves in the second tier of Spanish football, where he made 22 appearances and helped the team secure promotion to LaLiga. This experience should have provided him with valuable game time and the opportunity to develop his skills.
One of the main reasons Arroyo has been unable to make his Liverpool debut is due to work permit issues. When he initially left South America for England, he was unable to secure a work permit, which has hindered his progress and limited his opportunities to play for the Reds.
Arroyo’s loan move to Andorra presents a new opportunity for him to showcase his abilities and gain valuable playing time. Andorra will face Leganes in their opening match on August 13, and Arroyo could potentially make his debut in that game.
