Billy Koumetio, the French centre-back, has bid farewell to Liverpool after spending six years at the club. He has made a permanent move to Scotland, having once been on the fringes of the first team. However, after a series of difficult loan spells with Austria Wien, USL Dunkerque, and Blackburn, it was decided that Koumetio’s potential to progress in Liverpool’s first team was limited.
Consequently, Koumetio has left Liverpool this summer and has officially joined Dundee, a Scottish Premiership side. Reports suggest that he has signed an initial two-year deal with the option to extend it for another 12 months. It is believed that Liverpool received a nominal fee for his transfer. Koumetio has joined a team that has already begun their league campaign, as Dundee held their rivals Dundee United to a 2-2 draw last weekend. Dundee has been active in the transfer market and Koumetio is their seventh signing of the summer, including fellow centre-back Clark Robertson.
Koumetio’s journey at Liverpool began in 2020 when Jurgen Klopp, the manager, nicknamed him ‘Billy the Kid.’ Standing at 6’3″, Koumetio impressed Klopp during pre-season and made his debut in the Champions League later that year. He was included in the squad six times. However, after that campaign, he had limited involvement with the first team. His surprise start against Leicester in the Carabao Cup in 2021 was his only other appearance for the club, and he was substituted at half-time after struggling.
Since then, Koumetio has mainly played for Liverpool’s U21s, making 41 appearances over the last three seasons alongside his loan spells. His most recent game for the young Reds was in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Ipswich, where he scored in a 5-2 victory. He started the match alongside Rhys Williams, who is also set to leave Liverpool this summer.
Overall, Billy Koumetio’s time at Liverpool has come to an end. While he once showed promise and earned praise from Jurgen Klopp, his inability to break into the first team led to his departure. Dundee will now provide him with a fresh opportunity to showcase his talents and continue his development as a professional footballer. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.
