Erik ten Hag was a keen admirer of the player but never went to make a final offer, allowing Liverpool to trump him to the signing, with PSV confirming an agreement had been reached for the transfer.

However, Liverpool are yet to comment about the deal on their website or social media feeds, apart from Achterberg, who seemingly confirmed a deal had been reached between the two clubs.

Gakpo posted a picture from Christmas on his Instagram account and a comment from Achterberg suggested the deal was complete and Gakpo was set to move to Anfield.

Acterberg, the goalkeeping coach, commented: ‘Welcome to the club Cody,’ followed by a fist-bump, sunglasses, OK and love heart emojis, implying the move was done.

Gakpo was attracting interest from various clubs across Europe and that interest in him only rose after the World Cup, where he netted three goals in the tournament.

Manchester United were always mulling over a move and there was always a belief that he would move to Old Trafford, with some claims he was to replace Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, Liverpool were discreet in their proceedings and negotiation and got the deal done before them, with Virgil van Dijk reportedly key to the transfer, making a phone call that convinced Gakpo of the move.

Van Dijk has been calling for new signings at the Reds and previously said Gakpo had immense potential in the game, backing him for a bright future.

Gakpo has been involved in 36 goals in 34 appearances for club and country over the course of this season so far – an impressive return in such a short period of time.
