In preparation for Euro 2024, Andy Robertson, the captain of Scotland’s national team, opened up about his ankle injury and shared a text message he received from his former manager Jurgen Klopp. Robertson is gearing up to lead his team against Germany in their first match of the tournament.
Despite facing a challenging journey to reach this point, with injuries plaguing his career over the past year, Robertson remains optimistic. He stated, “[I am] physically good, mentally good, looking forward to what’s ahead.” He had been nursing an ankle injury since March, but it has improved significantly and is now in a good place. Robertson and his team were cautious not to aggravate the injury further, allowing him to fully recover before the tournament. While others may have been concerned, Robertson remained calm and confident, assuring everyone that he is ready to give his all on the field.
The ankle injury prevented Robertson from playing consistently for Liverpool during the run-in, but it was not the most significant injury he faced this season. In October 2023, while playing against Spain, he suffered a shoulder injury that required surgery and kept him out until January 2024. Despite these setbacks, Robertson’s determination and resilience have allowed him to return to peak form just in time for the Euros.
However, Scotland’s preparations for the tournament haven’t been entirely smooth. Robertson recently limped out of training, causing concern among fans. Assistant manager John Carver quickly reassured everyone that it was merely a precautionary measure. With his injury concerns behind him, Robertson is expected to lead his team as the starting left-back in their match against Germany.
Robertson emphasized the importance of the tournament for Scotland, stating, “We know what’s at stake. We’ve got a lot of incentive to do well, but one is becoming that legendary squad, and that has to drive us forward.” He believes that motivation will be key to their success, and they must secure a place in the knockout stages before anything else.
In a heartwarming gesture, Jurgen Klopp, Robertson’s former manager at Liverpool, sent him a congratulatory message when he set a new Scotland men’s team record as captain. Robertson shared that Klopp texted him to acknowledge the achievement. Light-heartedly, Robertson remarked that he wonders who Klopp will support in the match between Germany and Scotland but added, “I don’t need any advice from him. Hopefully, he can enjoy the game but not too much!”
After facing Germany, Robertson and his team will go up against Switzerland and Hungary to complete their group stage matches.
