In a stunning display of ineptitude, Spurs were mauled 6-1 by Newcastle at St James’ Park. Jacob Murphy scored twice, Alexander Isak added two more, and Joelinton rounded off the scoring in the first 21 minutes. This result left Liverpool nine points adrift of the Champions League places, while Newcastle moved into third place with 59 points. Tottenham remain fifth with 53 points.
The reactions to Tottenham’s collapse were varied, but all agreed that Liverpool’s chances of getting back into the top four were not helped by this result. Neil Atkinson said it was incredible that Spurs are the “saddest team in the division”, while Joel Rabinowitz noted that needing a favour from them is never a good place to be. Richard Osman joked that the government emergency alert at 3pm was about the Spurs score, and Andrew Beasley pointed out that Liverpool’s next two opponents are in contrasting form. Jamie Carragher was particularly scathing of Tottenham’s performance, calling them a “disgrace” and demanding they get a proper manager in right away.
It is clear that Liverpool cannot rely on Tottenham to help them in their quest for Champions League football. The Reds must first hold up their end of the bargain, but it is clear that Tottenham are not the helping kind.
