A Look Back at Liverpool’s Successful Decade in the 70s
The 1970s was a decade of immense success for Liverpool Football Club. Under the guidance of two legendary managers, Bill Shankly and Bob Paisley, the Reds won four league titles, four charity shields, two European Cups, two UEFA Cups, one FA Cup and one Super Cup. This was a relentless Red machine, one which had an insatiable appetite for lifting trophies.
Bill Shankly’s Legacy
Bill Shankly was the man who laid the foundations for Liverpool’s success in the 70s. Under his stewardship, the Reds won their first-ever trophy on the continent in 1973 when they lifted the UEFA Cup after a thrilling 3-2 aggregate win over Borussia Monchengladbach. In 1974, Shankly added a second FA Cup trophy to the cabinet after a 3-0 win over Newcastle at Wembley. On July 12 of that same year, Shankly sent shockwaves through the club when he announced his resignation.
Bob Paisley’s Era
Bob Paisley was the man chosen to succeed Shankly and he forged his own golden era at Liverpool. The Reds welcomed a king in 1977, as Sir Kenny Dalglish traded Celtic for Liverpool. The rest they say is history! Paisley led the club to back-to-back European Cups in 1976/77 and 1977/78, with a nailbiting 1-0 victory over Club Brugge at Wembley. The decade closed out with a league title and another charity shield.
The Kit of the 70s
The start of the ’70s saw Liverpool’s kit embellished only by the club emblem and with no sponsor or kit manufacturer in sight. It was Umbro who were in place for Liverpool’s back-to-back European Cups in 1976/77 and 1977/78.
The Anfield of the 70s
Just look at how much Anfield has changed! The photos taken in the 70s show a much different stadium than what we see today. You’re looking at the Main Stand here.
Conclusion
The 1970s was a significant era in Liverpool’s history, with silverware added to the cabinet and Bill Shankly passing on the baton to a man who would lead the club to unprecedented success in the 1980s. This was a relentless Red machine, one which had an insatiable appetite for lifting trophies, as demonstrated by their four league title celebrations (1972/73, 1975/76, 1976/77, 1978/79). From Shankly’s legacy to Paisley’s golden era and Dalglish’s arrival, it was a decade that saw Liverpool announce themselves on the European stage and will forever be remembered as one of the most successful periods in the club’s history.
