Ange Postecoglou Urges Tottenham to Improve After Blowing Another Lead
Tottenham Hotspur manager, Ange Postecoglou, has expressed his disappointment with his team’s recent performances after they failed to secure a victory in their last five games, despite taking the lead in each match. Postecoglou emphasized the need for more “conviction” from his players and warned them against seeking comfort in their struggles.
Missed Opportunities and Defensive Lapses
Reflecting on the team’s performance, Postecoglou criticized their inability to convert dominance into tangible results. He highlighted the poor performance in both attacking and defensive areas, attributing the conceded goals to terrible mistakes. The manager acknowledged that there is still a long way to go in terms of the team’s overall development.
“It’s another game where we’ve dominated and haven’t turned our dominance into something more tangible,” said Postecoglou. “We had some unbelievable chances, but our attacking play has a long way to go. In general, we have a long way to go, and tonight’s match was further evidence of that.”
Lack of Conviction in Front of Goal
Postecoglou identified the lack of conviction in front of goal as the primary reason for Tottenham’s failure to hold onto their leads. He dismissed fatigue as a factor and instead attributed the team’s struggles to a lack of clear determination and belief in their abilities.
“It’s just not having that conviction in front of goal to finish teams off, as simple as that,” explained Postecoglou. “All our chances have nothing to do with fatigue. We’re just going through this spell where we’re playing so-called good football, but I don’t see that. All I see is us not really showing any real clear conviction in what we’re doing. It’s almost like we’re thinking the ball will go into the net by itself, but it won’t.”
Focusing on Improvement
Postecoglou emphasized that there is no room for self-pity or seeking comfort in their current circumstances. He urged his team to channel their frustrations into a strong performance in their upcoming match, emphasizing the importance of showcasing conviction and determination as a team.
“There’s no point in feeling sorry for ourselves, looking for a cuddle anywhere,” said Postecoglou. “There’s only one way to change our circumstances, and that is to come here on Sunday and put in a performance. We need to not just play good football but also show some conviction about ourselves as a team.”
Regarding Son Heung-min, who appeared to limp off during the match, Postecoglou stated that he was unsure if the player had sustained an injury and did not provide further details.
