Christophe Galtier has confirmed that Lionel Messi will be leaving PSG this summer, sparking a potential transfer battle between some of the biggest and wealthiest clubs on the planet. Barcelona, Al-Hilal, Manchester City and Inter Miami are all likely candidates for his signature. Barcelona president Joan Laporta has made no secret of his desire to return Messi to the Camp Nou, with former teammate Xavi, now the club’s manager, having already spoken to Messi about a return. However, it remains to be seen whether Barcelona can afford the deal. Al-Hilal had reportedly received a huge £552m offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal back in May, although the speculation was quickly shut down by his father, Jorge. Manchester City could get even better with the addition of Messi, who has yet to play in English football, but would reunite with Pep Guardiola with whom he played some of the best football of his career at Barcelona. Inter Miami is another potential destination for Messi, with manager Phil Neville saying it would be ‘the biggest signing ever in American sports’. Lastly, a return to Newell’s Old Boys in Argentina would represent an emotional homecoming for Messi, who joined the club’s academy as a six year-old. Messi himself has addressed the possibility of one day returning to his first ever professional club. With so many potential suitors, it remains to be seen where Messi will end up next season.
