Lionel Messi NOT included on 30-man shortlist for 2022 Ballon d’Or award for first time since 2005 as Cristiano Ronaldo, Mohamed Salah, Erling Haaland and Karim Benzema make the cut ahead of seven-time winner

Lionel Messi is a shock exclusion on the list for this year’s Ballon d’Or award, with the 2022 nominees revealed.

The award, which is run in collaboration with France Football, celebrates the top players in world football with the main prize being among the most coveted in world football.

Messi has won the most Ballon d’Or awards in the competition’s history with a tally of seven top prizes, but misses out on the 30-man shortlist for the 2022 award.

The Argentine star completed a surprise move to Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2021 but struggled to show his best form during his first year with the Ligue 1 side.

This is despite the fact that he scored 11 goals in 34 appearances for the club, with Messi failing to make the shortlist for the first time since 2005.

Messi’s teammate, Neymar, also misses out on the shortlist after enduring an injury-hit campaign in Paris in which he managed just 28 appearances in all competitions.

Much to Messi’s frustration, Cristiano Ronaldo is among those nominated for the award after scoring 24 goals in all competitions in his first season back at Manchester United.

In terms of the Premier League, England’s domestic league are well represented with 14 of the 30 nominees currently contracted to clubs in the top flight.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, Luis Diaz, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez and Virgil van Dijk of Liverpool are all nominated, as are Harry Kane and Son Heung-min of Tottenham and Ronaldo of Man United.

Joao Cancelo, Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Erling Haaland, Riyad Mahrez and Bernardo Silva are also nominated, taking Man City’s involvement in the shortlist to six.

Along with Kylian Mbappe, one of the favourites for the award is Karim Benzema.

The Real Madrid forward enjoyed the season of his life last term with the French forward scoring 45 goals and getting 12 assists in all competitions for the Champions League winners.

With Messi not among the nominees, Benzema will be among the players hoping that they can secure the honour at the award ceremony later this year.
