Lionel Messi is widely regarded as one of the greatest players to have ever graced the beautiful game. The 35 year-old has recently left PSG after a two year spell in the French capital, with reports linking him with an emotional return to Barcelona and a big money move to Saudi Arabia. But how many goals has Messi scored in total for Barcelona, PSG and Argentina across his career?
Messi has scored 806 goals in 1027 games in total in his career for Barcelona, PSG and Argentina. This makes him second only to Cristiano Ronaldo in terms of most goals scored in the history of football. Of his 806 goals, 704 have been scored in his senior club career for Barcelona and PSG. The Argentine scored the bulk of his goals at Barcelona whilst playing for the Spanish giants between 2003 and 2021, with his 672 goals for Barcelona being the most goals scored for a single club by a player in the history of football. Messi added to his goal record at PSG but endured a largely underwhelming first season with the Parisians in 2021-22 which saw him score just 11 goals, however he performed better in his second campaign, managing 21 goals in all competitions. His highest tally in a single season is the 73 goals he hit in 2011-12 for Barcelona – a European record.
Messi has also scored 102 goals in 174 appearances for Argentina, making him the record goalscorer in the history of the Argentinian national team and the third highest goalscorer in international history behind Cristiano Ronaldo (122) and Ali Daei (109). In his 26 World Cup appearances, Messi has scored 13 goals with seven of them coming in the victorious 2022 campaign in Qatar. Despite this success, Argentina were beaten in the 2014 World Cup final by Germany, before going on to lose the 2015 and 2016 Copa America finals. As a result of the heartbreaking losses in the finals, Messi announced his international retirement in 2016. However, he reversed his decision shortly afterwards and he finally got his hands on an international trophy by guiding Argentina to the 2021 Copa America title before the World Cup the following year.
