Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo may have broken the internet on the eve of the World Cup, but thankfully they’re fully clothed.
Unlike social media superstar Kim Kardashian’s 2014 post, the pair of all-time sporting greats kept things a little more reserved, but have still set the online world ablaze.
Posing in an image for Louis Vuitton, the Argentina and Portugal legends came together in a rare photo opportunity which sent football fans crazy.
Currently at Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United, Messi and Ronaldo staged one of sports all-time great rivalries while in Spain with Barcelona and Real Madrid, taking home nine Champions League titles and 12 Ballon d’Ors between them.
It was rare, though, that the two were ever in the same frame together as they both hung around the opposite penalty box to each other, meaning the only real photo opportunities were at awards events.
Now though, French luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton have managed to get them in front of a camera as they posed for a game of chess ahead of the World Cup.
Whether they were together or were edited into the same image remains to be seen, but with portrait photographer Annie Leibovitz receiving credit for the snap, it suggests the two posed together.
Both superstars captioned their social posts: ‘Victory is a State of Mind. A long tradition of crafting trunks’.
And that may well blow any Kardashians out of the water, with Ronaldo and Messi the first and second most followed people on Instagram with a combined 870million followers at the time of writing.
Both of the all-time greats are now in Doha ahead of the Qatar World Cup, taking what’s almost certainly their final shot at the grand prize.
Portugal and Argentina have both won their continental prizes under the captaincies of the legendary duo, but it would certainly be a chess game for the ages should they meet in this year’s final.
Ronaldo recently gave his praise to his career rival in his bombshell Piers Morgan interview on TalkTV.
“Amazing player, he is magic, top,” Ronaldo explained on Piers Morgan Uncensored. “As a person, we share the stage 16 years, imagine, 16 years, we share. So, I have great relationship with him.”
He added: “I’m not friend of him in terms of, what I mean is a friend is the guy who is with you in your house, speaking on the phone, no, but it’s like a teammate.
“He’s a guy that I really respect the way he always speaks about me. Even his wife or my wife, my girlfriend, they always respect and they’re from Argentina.
“My girlfriend is from Argentina. So good. What I am going to say about Messi? A good guy who does everything for football.”
