Former Liverpool goalkeeper Liam Hughes has secured a surprise free transfer to a club in Scandinavia, marking six months since his release from Liverpool. Hughes initially joined Liverpool in 2021 as a training goalkeeper, coming from Celtic to strengthen the academy squads. However, he had the opportunity to warm the bench twice for the first team, playing against Sheffield United in the Premier League and Preston in the Carabao Cup in 2021. He also received a call-up to the Northern Ireland national team. In July, Hughes was released along with nine other players at the end of the season. Until recently, he was one of two players who had not found a new club, but he has now signed with Finnish side FC Haka on a free transfer.
Hughes has signed a two-year contract with FC Haka, a team in the Veikkausliiga. The club is preparing for their 2024 campaign, which begins with the Liigacup later this month. The decision to join FC Haka came after the appointment of fellow countryman Andy Smith as manager. Hughes was enticed by the opportunity to compete for the starting position at a top-tier club. He expressed his excitement about the project and how it could benefit his career. Hughes will wear the No. 1 shirt for FC Haka.
Hughes stated that he has several goals for his career in the next couple of years, but his main focus is on showcasing his abilities and proving himself to the team. He hopes to contribute to the team’s success in the upcoming season.
Following Hughes’ move to FC Haka, striker Fidel O’Rourke remains the only player released by Liverpool in the summer who has not yet signed with a new club. Other academy departures, including Oludare Olufunwa, Jack Bearne, Charlie Hayes-Green, and Iwan Roberts, have all found new teams.
