On April 17, 2023, Liverpool cruised to an emphatic 6-1 win against Leeds at Elland Road in the Premier League. Goals from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah (2), Diogo Jota (2), and Darwin Nunez sealed the victory for the Reds. Goalkeeper Alisson was rarely tested and gave his teammates a rollicking for not getting close enough to Brenden Aaronson when he hit the crossbar. Trent Alexander-Arnold played in a roaming midfield role and created the opening goal for Gakpo and the sixth for Nunez. Ibrahima Konate was solid overall, but had a lapse in concentration which led to Luis Sinisterra’s goal. Virgil van Dijk was dominant in the air, while Andy Robertson played fairly deep and did his defensive duties well. Fabinho did a good job at the heart of the midfield, Jordan Henderson covered well for Alexander-Arnold on the right, and Curtis Jones won the ball back effectively. Salah was a menace to Leeds’ defence all night, scoring two ruthless finishes, while Gakpo tapped home the opening goal and provided an assist for Salah. Jota ended his year-long drought with two quickfire goals and Roberto Firmino nearly fluked a cross into the top corner against his former club. Manager Jurgen Klopp was pleased with the result, which keeps Liverpool’s slim hopes of finishing in the top four alive.
