Ajax Sign Chuba Akpom from Middlesbrough in €12m Deal

Ajax, the Dutch football club, has secured the signing of Chuba Akpom from Middlesbrough. The Championship side and the player have agreed to the move, which will see the 27-year-old forward join Ajax for a fee of €12 million, with an additional €2 million in potential add-ons. Akpom is set to undergo a medical examination on Monday and will then sign a five-year contract with the club.

Akpom had an exceptional season with Middlesbrough last year, scoring an impressive 29 goals in 42 games across all competitions. Despite having one year remaining on his contract with the Teesside club, Akpom’s future became uncertain amid speculation about a potential transfer.

Earlier this month, Akpom expressed his desire to stay at Middlesbrough, stating that he “would love to stay” at the club. However, he also acknowledged that many factors were beyond his control. Ultimately, the opportunity to join Ajax proved too enticing for the talented forward.

Chuba Akpom began his professional career at Arsenal before embarking on a series of loan moves across the Football League. In 2018, he made a permanent switch to Greek side PAOK. Now, he is ready to take on a new challenge with Ajax, one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs.

Ajax had a disappointing season in Eredivisie last year, finishing in third place. However, they started the 2023-24 campaign on a positive note with a convincing 4-1 victory over Heracles. The signing of Akpom is expected to bolster their attacking options and provide them with a potent goal-scoring threat.

The €12 million deal represents a significant investment for Ajax, highlighting their belief in Akpom’s abilities. The club’s sporting director, Marc Overmars, expressed his excitement about the signing, stating that Akpom’s goal-scoring record and versatility make him a valuable addition to the squad.

Akpom’s arrival at Ajax will also reunite him with former Arsenal teammate and current Ajax captain, Dusan Tadic. The two players enjoyed a successful spell together at Arsenal’s youth academy, and their reunion could potentially reignite their on-field chemistry.

For Middlesbrough, losing Akpom is undoubtedly a blow to their attacking options. The forward played a crucial role in their campaign last season, and his departure leaves a void that will need to be filled. However, the club’s decision to trigger a one-year contract extension in January shows their recognition of Akpom’s contributions and their desire to secure his services for as long as possible.

As for Akpom himself, the move to Ajax represents an opportunity to compete at a higher level and showcase his talents on the European stage. Ajax has a rich history of developing young players and providing them with a platform to shine. Akpom will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of past Ajax stars and make a significant impact at the club.

In conclusion, Chuba Akpom’s transfer from Middlesbrough to Ajax is set to be finalized in a €12 million deal. The 27-year-old forward’s impressive goal-scoring record and versatility make him an exciting addition to Ajax’s squad. While Middlesbrough will miss his contributions, they recognize the opportunity Akpom has been presented with and wish him the best in his new adventure. As for Akpom, he is eager to prove himself at one of Europe’s top clubs and continue his development as a player.
