Southampton manager Ruben Selles was left to rue the fine margins that cost his side in their 1-0 defeat to West Ham United at London Stadium. The Saints were unable to find a way back into the game after Issa Diop’s first-half goal for the Hammers.
Speaking after the match, Selles said: “It was a tight game and we had some chances, but unfortunately we couldn’t take them. We had some good moments in the game, but in the end it was just a few fine margins that cost us. We couldn’t quite fight back.”
The Saints had a number of chances to equalise, but were unable to find a way past West Ham goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski. Selles added: “We had some good opportunities, but we just couldn’t find the back of the net. We have to take our chances if we want to get something from these games.”
Despite the defeat, Selles was pleased with his side’s performance and believes they can take positives from the game. He said: “We played some good football and created some good chances, so there are definitely some positives to take from this game. We just need to keep working hard and take our chances when they come.”
Selles’ side will now turn their attention to their next game against Leicester City, and he is confident his side can bounce back from the defeat. He said: “We have to move on from this result and focus on our next game. We know we can do better and we will be looking to put in a strong performance against Leicester.”
