Lasse Abildgaard: The Rising Star Who Chose Ajax Over Manchester United
In a surprising turn of events, 17-year-old Lasse Abildgaard decided to snub Manchester United and join the prestigious Dutch club Ajax in the last summer transfer window. Despite having a trial at Man Utd in March 2023, Abildgaard made the bold decision to opt for Ajax, calling it the ‘best’ option for him.
During his trial at Manchester United’s Carrington training ground, Abildgaard spent a week showcasing his skills. However, it was ultimately him and his team who decided that Ajax was the right fit for his career. Following a successful two-week trial with the Dutch club, Abildgaard was offered a three-year deal in July 2023.
The Danish youth international, who plays as a winger, was added to Ajax’s U17s squad and is eagerly awaiting his first-team debut. Speaking about his decision to choose Ajax over Manchester United, Abildgaard told Tipsbladet, “We ended up making the decision that it was the best for me [to join Ajax instead].”
Abildgaard is thoroughly enjoying his time at Ajax, expressing his excitement about being part of such a prestigious club. He described the experience of training at Ajax, saying, “Every day you come in, there are expensive cars, you see the Ajax logo, there are [security] guards outside, there are a lot of training sessions. It’s just great to put on the Ajax training clothes every day.”
The young talent also shared insights into the process of joining Ajax, mentioning that it was a collaborative effort between the club, his family, and his advisor. Despite interest from other clubs, Abildgaard felt that Ajax was the perfect fit for his development as a player.
