LAFC Set to Sign World Cup-Winning Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris from Tottenham
LAFC, the Major League Soccer side, is on the verge of finalizing a deal to sign Hugo Lloris, the World Cup-winning goalkeeper from Tottenham. Lloris, whose contract with Tottenham expires next summer, is expected to join LAFC this winter in preparation for the upcoming preseason.
The completion of the deal is now considered a mere formality, marking the end of Lloris’ impressive 11-year tenure in north London. During his time at Tottenham, Lloris made 444 appearances in all competitions, including 361 in the Premier League since his arrival from Lyon in 2012. He was appointed club captain in 2015 and featured 25 times in the top flight last season. However, he has not been given any playing time under Ange Postecoglou in the first half of this campaign, with Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster occupying the No. 1 and No. 2 goalkeeper positions respectively.
Lloris expressed his openness to a move earlier this year and was allowed to miss Tottenham’s pre-season tour as he sought a transfer that ultimately did not materialize. With 145 appearances for France, including winning the 2018 World Cup and captaining his country in the 2022 final in Qatar, Lloris brings a wealth of experience and leadership to LAFC.
LAFC had a successful season, reaching the MLS Cup but losing to the Columbus Crew. However, they clinched the 2022 MLS Cup and also made it to the final of the 2023 Concacaf Champions Cup. As they prepare for the 2024 MLS season, LAFC is in need of a new starting goalkeeper since Maxime Crepeau, their previous starter for the past two years, is now a free agent.
The signing of Hugo Lloris will undoubtedly bolster LAFC’s squad as they aim for success in the upcoming season. The 2024 MLS season is set to kick off on February 21, and LAFC is eager to make their mark with their new World Cup-winning goalkeeper.
